How Do I Know Which Orange County Contractor is Right for Me?

Experience plays a large part in selecting a contractor but a personal connection is just as important.

There are many good contractors to select from; there is not one that is best for everyone or every project. Experience plays a large part in selecting a contractor but a personal connection is just as important. Residential remodeling is very personal, the contractor you select will be a part of your family for some time and it’s important you fully trust them and can communicate easily. There was a movie in 1986, titled The Money Pit, starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long. There is a scene were Shelley Long is in her bathroom, getting ready when she opens the medicine cabinet, there is no back in the cabinet, the contractor and Shelley are facing each other and share good mornings. The contractor you select for you and your family must have a shared level of mutual respect and trust for the remodeling process in order to move as smoothly as possible. Choose the contractor you think has the experience for your project and one that will produce the quality you expect, within a reasonable budget, and most importantly, one you can effectively communicate with. The relationship with your contractor is similar to a marriage, select correctly and you will be happy with your choice for a long time.

Try researching your contractor’s name online for additional reviews.

The California Contractors State License Board has a publication titled “What You Should Know Before Hiring A Contractor”. In short, the following are some important points in the pamphlet:

  • Only hire state licensed contractors
  • Try researching your contractor’s name online for additional reviews
  • Check the contractor license number
  • Avoid being caught up in high-pressure sales tactics
  • Avoid rushing into repairs. Take time to get at least three identical bids and verify testimonials
  • Ask to see the contractor’s “pocket license” or their representative’s “Home Improvement Salesperson” registration
  • Ask your contractor if they carry general liability and workers’ compensation insurance
  • Ensure all project materials and expectations are spelled out and signed in a written contract, including clean-up, debris removal and site security

Selecting a contractor is much more than just pricing, “Quality is not what happens when what you do matches your intentions. It is what happens when what you do matches your customers’ expectations” (Guaspari). It is critical that your relationship with your contractor starts on a solid foundation with clear expectations on both sides. This can only be achieved by clear and concise details being provided prior to signing any contract or exchanging any money.

As with any relationship, meeting expectations can only be achieved if both parties understand fully what is expected of them.

Once you have established which contractor fits your needs best, require they provide you a complete, detailed set of drawings and specifications including all materials being used by brand name, model numbers, and finishes. As with any relationship, meeting expectations can only be achieved if both parties understand fully what is expected of them.

You have many choices of licensed contractors in Orange County, many with experience, outstanding qualifications, and excellent reputations. If you take the time to fully interview contractors, asking the important questions, you will be rewarded with a relationship that will last well past the completion of your project.
